Wordless Wednesday - Great Great Grandfather

This is a photo of my Great Great Grandfather, Alexander Rutherford,(1843-1900). He was a fisherman and came from the fishing village of Newhaven, Edinburgh. Not sure what the hat is he has in his hand, just wondering if he had his own boat and it was a skippers hat.

  1. Hello
I've been researching my wife's family to identify a link to 'Sandy Whitestar' Alexander Rutherford, born about 1822 in Newhaven Leith. He had a son born in 1843 in Newhaven, whom I believe would be the person in your image. There are a number of historic images of Sandy Whitestar taken around 1845 in Newhaven, these are amongst the first social images ever taken, I have three copies which I've located. Sandy is the Scottish abbreviation for Alexander and Whitestar is the name of his fishing boat, this was common practice at the time. Hope this is of interest.
